Daana دانہ
A tasbeeh that behaves like the one in your hand.
Beads on a cord, pulled across one at a time with the thumb. The strand hanging here is the app’s own: the same beads, the same weight, the same count. Pull one.

How it counts
One bead to a pull.
Daana counts the way a tasbeeh does, so the thumb can keep the count while the heart keeps the words. You need never look at the screen.
-
It counts when it lands
A swipe down takes one bead across the gap, with a tap in the hand as it lands. One swipe is one bead, however long or fast.
-
A short pull slides back
Let go too soon and the bead returns to its pile. Nothing is counted, and nothing is heard.
-
Slowly back up to undo
Push the last bead slowly back up to take a count back. A quick flick upward never undoes anything.
-
Markers and the imam
After every thirty-three a marker passes by itself, with two light ticks. After ninety-nine the imam waits at the gap: pull it as the hundredth.
-
With your eyes closed
A bead, a bead taken back, a marker and a completed round each feel different in the hand, so the count can be kept by touch alone.
-
For every reader
With VoiceOver or TalkBack the strand is one control: swipe up to count, down to take one back.
Three to choose from
Each strand drawn bead by bead.
Every bead is lit by one lamp as it turns on the cord, and no two are cut alike. Each strand has its own thread, its own sound and its own feel, and the words beside it take on its colour.
-
Olive wood
Round lacquered beads on waxed cotton, the markers stained dark.
-
Baltic amber
Long barrel beads the light passes through, on dark red silk. Softer in the hand and in the ear.
-
Feroza
Turquoise, as Urdu and Persian call it: polished stone on navy silk, with silver markers and imam. Hard in the hand, bright in the ear.
Six dhikr
Each counted to its number.
The count follows the hadith. The tasbih after prayer is a set of a hundred, said once at a sitting. Two are said a hundred times a day, and more is welcome. The rest have no number, and are counted in rounds of a hundred that never say complete.

The name
A bead, and a seed.
Daana is Urdu and Persian for a bead on a string, and for a seed. The Quran likens what is given for the sake of Allah to a single seed:
كَمَثَلِ حَبَّةٍ أَنْبَتَتْ سَبْعَ سَنَابِلَ فِي كُلِّ سُنْبُلَةٍ مِائَةُ حَبَّةٍ
“like a seed that grows seven ears, and in every ear a hundred seeds.”
A hundred in every ear, and a hundred on every strand. Daana is made as sadaqa jariyah, a charity whose good keeps flowing after the giving is done. So it is free, and will stay free: no ads, no accounts, no subscriptions, and nothing you count ever leaves your phone.
“When a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: a continuing charity, knowledge that is benefited from, or a righteous child who prays for them.”
The hundredth
Pass it on.
“Whoever guides someone to good will have a reward like the one who does it.”
If Daana helps you keep your dhikr, give it to someone it would help too, and remember the ones who made it in your duas.
